What Determines Your Personal Design Style?

When it comes to interior design for the home, I’m a firm believer that personal style is the most important aspect. After all, your home should be a place that makes you feel happy and at peace. It should speak to who you are as a person and be a place that you truly feel is your own. Your home should also suit your lifestyle and be a place where you can function at your best, whether you’re looking to rest, work, or socialize. But how do you determine exactly what your personal style is?

Understanding Personal Design Style

Your personal design style is a reflection of who you are and how you live. It encompasses your tastes, preferences, and the elements that make you feel at home. Understanding your style is crucial for creating a space that is not only beautiful but also works for you. It’s about finding the balance between aesthetics and practicality, and ensuring that every piece in your home tells your story.

The Personal Style Consultation

No matter what type of interior design project I take on, the first step is always a personal style consultation. During this initial meeting, I take the time to get to know you, your lifestyle, and your visual preferences. I may ask you about your likes and dislikes, discuss your daily routines, and explore your vision for your home.

One of my favorite techniques is to have my clients select photographs from magazines that speak to them, as these images often reveal underlying themes in personal style. I’ll give you a time limit and ask you to pick the images that pop out to you the most in that window of time. Once you’ve chosen your images, we can discuss why you were drawn to those particular images. We can identify recurring patterns, colors, and themes  to help us piece together a comprehensive picture of your unique design style.

Additional Tips for Discovering Your Personal Style

Discovering your personal style can be an exciting and enlightening process. Start with some self-reflection. Think about your favorite colors, textures, and materials, and consider how your hobbies, interests, and daily routines might influence your design preferences.

Explore different styles by creating mood boards or using online design tools, and don't be afraid to visit showrooms or model homes to see various styles in person. You can also find inspiration from design blogs, social media, and home décor books. These steps can help you gain clarity on your style and make more informed design choices.

The Role of the Interior Designer

As an interior designer, my role is to take the insights gained from our consultation and transform them into a cohesive design plan tailored to your style. I use the information about your preferences and lifestyle to guide decisions on furniture, color schemes, and accessories.

My goal is to create a space that not only looks great but also feels right for you. By blending your unique preferences  with professional design principles, I ensure that every element of your home reflects your personality. This collaborative process results in a home that is beautiful, functional, and unmistakably yours.
